History of Quintana Roo

Quintana Roo is the youngest state in Mexico, it became its own territory November 24th, 1902. Quintana Roo is named after a lawyer, Andres Quintana Roo who was born in Merida which is a state next to Yucatan.

Andres and his wife both fought for Mexico’s independence. Quintana Roo became a popular tourist spot when it was known that the Maya ruins of Chacchoben, Coba, and many others are located there.

Quintana Roo is divided into 11 municipalities. Each of these municipalities each are run by their own president.

Quintana Roo’s tourism shot up in the 1970’s. A little fun fact is that Quintana Roo is ranked sixth between other Mexican states. Quintana Roo has a wide variety of ecosystems; the jungle, savanna, mangrove forests, and coral reefs.

It is home to many different types of animals like the crocodile, manatee, variety of reptiles, and monkeys, etc. That is why Quintana is a very popular vacation spot.

Little interesting fact is that Quintana Roo as one of the best manatee habitats worldwide. When most people visit Quintana Roo they stay on the resorts like Cancun and Tulum to go site seeing.

Things to know when visiting Quintana Roo

The time zone can be tricky when visiting a new place, Quintana Roo has a Southeastern time zone. On February 1st, 2015, Quintana Roo started their Southeastern time zone.

It is five hours behind on the Coordinated Universal Time. By using this time zone, it allows Quintana Roo to let tourists visit sites for more along with the beaches, it also makes it cheaper to visit.

Traveling to and from Cancun and other resorts

You can fly, take a taxi, or rent a car to get to the Cancun, Tulum, and Playa del Carmen.

The cheapest way to travel would be getting one of the little vans which are called collectivos, it could take anywhere from 2 hours and a half to a little over 4 hours depending on where you are going. There are also many buses which connect the entire area.

Location of Quintana Roo

Quintana Roo is located in Southeastern Mexico, on the east of the Yucatan Peninsula. Quintana Roo is on the eastern coast of Caribbean Sea and the is on the north of the Gulf of Mexico.

Quintana Roo is the home to Cancun, and the islands Cozumel and Isla Mujeres. The state is 44,705 square kilometers (17,261 square miles). Since 1997, Quintana Roo has been in a dispute over some land with Yucatan and Campeche.
